Better Hearing and Speech Month is celebrated each May to raise public awareness of speech and language disorders that affect many Canadians. Speech and language disorders can take many forms and can limit academic achievement, social adjustment, and career advancement. An individual may be born with a speech or language disorder, or it may be caused by accidental injury or illness.
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are the professionals who treat all types of speech, language, and related disorders. They hold at least a Master's degree and are certified by the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO). SLPs work in schools, private practice, hospitals, clinics, and other health and education settings.
SLPs have the specialized knowledge and experience needed to identify communication problems and to provide the help children need to build critical language and literacy skills. SLPs are often the first professionals to identify the root cause of reading and writing problems through a child’s difficulty with language. With their help, children can build the skills they need to succeed in school and in life.

unfortunately SLP's don't have the resources to help all the kids out there that need it. parents have to be very proacitve in getting their children help if they think they need it. SLP's in the public school system don't have the time to see all the kids that need them. often only the most serious cases get help and the others may get seen once a month if they are lucky. very sad.
There have been some great SLP's here, but like everything else, budget cuts are seriously undermining the need to help these children lead a productive life. I believe too, this is happening across the country, not just this Province. Yes, it is not only sad, but disgraceful.
